Miriam and Peter Lukken retired to the tranquility of Sapelo Island after years of imagining a full-time life on the island. With a family legacy crossing four centuries, they are proud to now call themselves Sapeloneans.

Peter has a great passion for American history and in particular, Georgia history. He has spent years reviewing private source material regarding Sapelo and its people. As an aspirant historian and now as an outfitter, he is thrilled to discuss the extraordinary and compelling narrative of the island and region.

Peter has spent over 20 years with the Department of Defense as a senior operations analyst. He has lived and worked in remote locations and adverse theaters throughout the world. Retiring to Sapelo, he now enjoys placid days meeting new friends that share a passion for history and the road less traveled.

Peter’s wife, Miriam, is the 9th generation to enjoy a wondrous life on Sapelo. Where others may see it as remote, she finds solitude and contentment. Miriam’s ancestral bond to Sapelo began with her lineal descent from the Scottish Clan Chiefs, John Mohr Mackintosh and his son William Mackintosh, who were awarded King’s Grants of more than 1000 acres on April 15th, 1756. Since then every generation has been represented on Sapelo. Miriam grew up hearing her grandmother’s countless stories of life on Sapelo and from there the seed was sown.

Miriam is a celebrated southern writer and has authored several successful books. She has published and had book tours throughout the U.S. and Canada with well-known publishing houses such as Time Warner. One of her most noted books, Mrs Dunwoody’s Excellent Instructions for Home Keeping became a southern staple in many households. Miriam is most excited about her next project, editing and publishing old family manuscripts handed down from generations regarding Sapelo and the surrounding region.
